about the root cellar lounge...

The Root Cellar Lounge is Bloomington Indiana's famous underground speakeasy. Located literally underground, beneath FARMbloomington restaurant (108 E Kirkwood Avenue) in the historic Odd Fellows building (enter through the back door located in the alley behind FARM).

talk talk talk - what people are saying...

"I love the fact that you can finally go somewhere and not care about what you wear or how you dance. Everybody is there to have a great time!" (new wave night)

"This is the happiest place on earth." (biff bang pow!!)

"The deejays obviously love this music and know it inside out... they know how to make people freak out, I mean really lose it!" (new wave night)

"You will hear music that is far better than anything on the radio today... mostly early 80's stuff, which many will argue is the best of the era, and it is all over the map... hits, cult classics, 7" and 12" versions, skankin' ska, synth pop, post-punk, and one hit wonders." (new wave night)

"The crowd was super diverse, no elitist bulls**t, everybody fit in. The drinks were pricey but strong... I danced my ass off." (biff bang pow!!)

"You will be hard-pressed to find anything that can top the sweat soaked, rip-roaring bliss of a New Wave Night... the cheering bodies on the dance floor were vibratin' like washing machines and flailing around with the breathless abandon of a group of toddlers." (new wave night)

"Ridiculously fun!" (MEOW)

"New Wave Night is not much different from dancing at home alone in your pajamas to your favorite Smiths or Cure albums, only here you've got someone to mix your drinks and change the records for you." (new wave night)

"The Root Cellar's mid-80's house party vibe fits the music like a glove and really adds to the time travel effect." (new wave night)

"The best part for me was the lack of hipster snobbery, the deejays were happy to play my requests." (new wave night)

"Great mix of freaks - goths, ex-goths, new wavers, post punkers, rock & rollers, it was awesome." (new wave night)

"Transports you back to a more simple era before cell phones, the Internet, and iPods." (new wave night)

"Mason and Jonny have turned what could have been a by-the-numbers dance party into a transcendent nightlife experience." (new wave night)

"Almost everybody was dressed up in fancy mod clothes, girls in shiny boots and weird sunglasses dancing everywhere." (biff bang pow!!)

"The whole room (I mean the WHOLE room) was dancing." (MEOW)

"The music was louder, grittier, faster and weirder than the usual fare of a "retro" dance night" (new wave night)

"It's loud, busy with sythesizers, snapping and cracking like a space station gone beserk" (MEOW)
